Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of the BOKS program in increasing children's physical activity.
  • To compare physical activity levels between children participating in BOKS and a control group.
  • To examine physical activity differences on program days versus non-program days.

Main Methods:

  • A quasi-experimental design was employed with 426 students (Kindergarten-6th grade) in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
  • Participants included BOKS program enrollees and matched non-BOKS control students.
  • Physical activity was measured using Fitbit Charge HR™ monitors, assessing total steps, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), vigorous physical activity (VPA), and total physical activity (TPA).

  • BOKS participants showed significantly more steps, MVPA, and VPA on BOKS days compared to controls.
  • Across all school days, BOKS participants accumulated more total steps than controls.
