Frequency-dependent Selection01:21

Frequency-dependent Selection

23.1K
When the fitness of a trait is influenced by how common it is (i.e., its frequency) relative to different traits within a population, this is referred to as frequency-dependent selection. Frequency-dependent selection may occur between species or within a single species. This type of selection can either be positive—with more common phenotypes having higher fitness—or negative, with rarer phenotypes conferring increased fitness.

Predator-Prey Interactions02:39

Predator-Prey Interactions

21.1K
Predators consume prey for energy. Predators that acquire prey and prey that avoid predation both increase their chances of survival and reproduction (i.e., fitness). Routine predator-prey interactions elicit mutual adaptations that improve predator offenses, such as claws, teeth, and speed, as well as prey defenses, including crypsis, aposematism, and mimicry. Thus, predator-prey interactions resemble an evolutionary arms race.

CRISPR01:59

CRISPR

57.6K
Genome editing technologies allow scientists to modify an organism’s DNA via the addition, removal, or rearrangement of genetic material at specific genomic locations. These types of techniques could potentially be used to cure genetic disorders such as hemophilia and sickle cell anemia. One popular and widely used DNA-editing research tool that could lead to safe and effective cures for genetic disorders is the CRISPR-Cas9 system. CRISPR-Cas9 stands for Clustered Regularly Interspaced...

The Availability Heuristic01:08

The Availability Heuristic

6.9K
A heuristic is a general problem-solving framework (Tversky & Kahneman, 1974). You can think of these as mental shortcuts that are used to solve problems. Different types of heuristics are used in different types of situations, and the impulse to use a heuristic occurs when one of five conditions is met (Pratkanis, 1989):

MicroRNAs01:22

MicroRNAs

24.0K
MicroRNA (miRNA) are short, regulatory RNA transcribed from introns—non-coding regions of a gene—or intergenic regions—stretches of DNA present between genes. Several processing steps are required to form biologically active, mature miRNA. The initial transcript, called primary miRNA (pri-mRNA), base-pairs with itself forming a stem-loop structure. Within the nucleus, an endonuclease enzyme, called Drosha, shortens the stem-loop structure into hairpin-shaped pre-miRNA. After...

The Nitrogen Cycle01:49

The Nitrogen Cycle

59.6K
Nitrogen atoms, present in all proteins and DNA, are recycled between abiotic and biotic components of the ecosystem. However, the primary form of nitrogen on Earth is nitrogen gas, which cannot be used by most animals and plants. Thus, nitrogen gas must first be converted into a usable form by nitrogen-fixing bacteria before it can be cycled through other living organisms. The use of nitrogen-containing fertilizers and animal waste products in human agriculture has greatly influenced the...

Summary

This case study highlights a rare, idiopathic condition mimicking influenza. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial for survival, as untreated cases have extremely high mortality rates.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Case Study
  • Rare Diseases
  • Infectious Disease Mimicry

Background:

  • Presents a rare idiopathic condition with high untreated mortality.
  • Often initially misdiagnosed as influenza due to prodromic symptoms.

Observation:

  • The case study details the pathophysiology, symptomatology, and diagnostics of this condition.
  • Prodromic manifestations are common preceding diagnosis.

Findings:

  • Untreated mortality rates are extremely high.
  • Appropriate therapy initiation significantly improves patient survival.

Implications:

  • Emphasizes the importance of considering rare conditions in differential diagnoses.
  • Highlights the critical need for timely and accurate diagnosis and treatment of potentially fatal diseases.
