Background:

No existing instruments effectively measure nursing students' situation awareness.
Situation awareness is critical for safe and effective patient care.
Developing a reliable assessment tool is essential for educational evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate the Performance-Based Situation Awareness Observation Schedule (PSASOS).
To provide a standardized method for measuring nursing students' situation awareness.
To enhance the evaluation of clinical competency in nursing education.

Main Methods:

A qualitative, consensus-driven process involving 12 expert clinicians established content validity.
The PSASOS was piloted with final-year nursing students undergoing situation awareness training.
Interrater reliability was assessed using Cohen's kappa.

Main Results:

The final PSASOS includes 54 items assessing situation awareness strategies and task errors.
Cohen's kappa values indicated substantial agreement for approximately 80% of the items.
The tool demonstrated strong reliability and validity for measuring situation awareness.

Conclusions:

A valid and reliable tool, the PSASOS, has been developed to measure nursing students' situation awareness.
This instrument offers a practical solution for assessing a crucial aspect of clinical performance.
The PSASOS can inform curriculum development and improve nursing education outcomes.
