Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the exercise capacity of patients following mitral valve surgery.
  • To identify key predictors influencing exercise recovery in this patient cohort.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 302 mitral regurgitation patients undergoing surgery were analyzed.
  • Postoperative peak oxygen consumption (VO2) was measured 3 weeks after surgery.
  • Multivariate logistic regression identified significant predictors of preserved versus poor exercise recovery (≥65% vs. <65% of predicted VO2max).

Main Results:

  • Female sex (OR, 2.65) was associated with poor exercise capacity.
  • Obesity (OR, 0.26), sedentary lifestyle (OR, 0.47), and high NYHA class (OR, 0.52) predicted poor recovery.
  • These factors were identified through univariate and multivariate analyses (P < .05).

Conclusions:

  • Preoperative factors like female sex, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and high NYHA class are significant predictors of reduced exercise capacity post-mitral valve surgery.
  • These easily assessable factors can guide clinical teams in screening patients.
  • Early identification allows for tailored postoperative plans and timely consultations to improve patient outcomes.
