Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate a sequential, minimally invasive catheter-based treatment approach for isolated simple pneumothorax.
  • To compare the efficacy, cost, and hospitalization duration of this approach versus traditional chest tube thoracostomy.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study of 35 patients (37 pneumothoraces) using a standardized sequential protocol.
  • Involved Seldinger technique catheter placement, aspiration, Heimlich valve, and chest catheter suction.
  • Chest radiography and observation were used to document lung reexpansion.
