Initiation of Translation02:33

Initiation of Translation

38.4K
Initiating translation is complex because it involves multiple molecules. Initiator tRNA, ribosomal subunits, and eukaryotic initiation factors (eIFs) are all required to assemble on the initiation codon of mRNA. This process consists of several steps that are mediated by different eIFs.
First, the initiator tRNA must be selected from the pool of elongator tRNAs by eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF2). The initiator tRNA (Met-tRNAi) has conserved sequence elements including modified bases at...

Eulerian and Lagrangian Flow Descriptions

1.9K
Fluid flow analysis is critical in many scientific and engineering disciplines, and two principal approaches are used to describe this flow: the Eulerian and Lagrangian methods. These methods offer different perspectives on monitoring and analyzing the motion of fluids, each with distinct advantages depending on the scenario.
The Eulerian method focuses on fixed points in space where fluid properties, such as velocity, pressure, and temperature, are observed as the fluid moves between these...

Transcription Initiation01:47

Transcription Initiation

20.4K
Initiation is the first step of transcription in eukaryotes. Prokaryotic RNA Polymerase (RNAP) can bind to the template DNA and start transcribing. On the other hand, transcription in eukaryotes requires additional proteins, called transcription factors, to first bind to the promoter region in the DNA template. This binding helps recruit the specific RNAP that can assemble on the DNA and start transcription.
The promoters and enhancers and their accessory proteins allow tight regulation of...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Surgical Simulation
  • Gastroenterology Training

Background:

  • High cost of traditional endoscopy simulators limits access for surgical and gastroenterology trainees.
  • Simulation-based training is crucial for developing fundamental endoscopic skills.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and evaluate a low-cost endoscopic simulator and box trainer.
  • To assess the effectiveness of the YazanoScope in improving endoscopic skills.

Main Methods:

  • A wireless camera ($20) was added to a discarded endoscope, paired with a $32 box trainer to create the YazanoScope system.
  • Participants (n=40) trained on 5 fundamental endoscopic skills (FES) tasks to mastery.
  • Outcomes included skill assessments on a computer simulator and trainee feedback on haptic feedback.

Main Results:

  • 100% of trainees achieved cecal intubation after training, compared to 10% at baseline.
  • Procedure completion improved significantly, with no significant change in procedure time.
  • All trainees preferred the YazanoScope's haptic feedback over a computer simulator.

Conclusions:

  • The inexpensive YazanoScope is an effective tool for endoscopic simulation training.
  • The system enhances procedural completion and offers superior haptic feedback at a low cost.
  • This portable simulator provides a valuable alternative to expensive traditional simulators.
