Background:

  • Salmonella is a recognized cause of invasive infections.
  • Extra-intestinal manifestations of Salmonella are less common than gastrointestinal disease.
  • Head and neck abscesses are an atypical presentation for Salmonella.

Observation:

  • An 18-year-old diabetic male presented with left neck pain and swelling.
  • Symptoms began approximately four weeks after a gastrointestinal illness.
  • Imaging confirmed a left-sided neck abscess.

Findings:

  • Surgical drainage of the abscess was performed.
  • Cultures identified non-typhoid Salmonella species.
  • The patient responded well to intravenous antibiotics.

Implications:

  • Salmonella should be included in the differential diagnosis for neck abscesses of unknown origin.
  • Immunocompromised patients, particularly those with diabetes, are at risk for unusual Salmonella presentations.
  • Early recognition and appropriate treatment are crucial for favorable outcomes in invasive Salmonella infections.
