Improving Translational Accuracy02:07

Improving Translational Accuracy

14.1K
Base complementarity between the three base pairs of mRNA codon and the tRNA anticodon is not a failsafe mechanism. Inaccuracies can range from a single mismatch to no correct base pairing at all. The free energy difference between the correct and nearly correct base pairs can be as small as 3 kcal/ mol. With complementarity being the only proofreading step, the estimated error frequency would be one wrong amino acid in every 100 amino acids incorporated. However, error frequencies observed in...

Uncertainty in Measurement: Accuracy and Precision

100.2K
Scientists typically make repeated measurements of a quantity to ensure the quality of their findings and to evaluate both the precision and the accuracy of their results. Measurements are said to be precise if they yield very similar results when repeated in the same manner. A measurement is considered accurate if it yields a result that is very close to the true or the accepted value. Precise values agree with each other; accurate values agree with a true value.

Administering Oxygen by Nasal Cannula

2.8K
Oxygen therapy is critical to patient care, especially for those struggling with respiratory issues. This intervention increases the oxygen concentration in the lungs, enhancing the amount of oxygen transported to the body's tissues. One standard method of delivering supplemental oxygen is through a nasal cannula, a non-invasive device that provides low to medium oxygen concentrations.

Rigid Body Equilibrium Problems - II

7.9K
A rigid body is in static equilibrium when the net force and the net torque acting on the system are equal to zero.
Consider two children sitting on a seesaw, which has negligible mass. The first child has a mass (m1) of 26 kg and sits at point A, which is 1.6 meters (r1) from the pivot point B; the second child has a mass (m2) of 32 kg and sits at point C. How far from the pivot point B should the second child sit (r2) to balance the seesaw?

Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Epileptology
  • Medical Device Technology

Background:

  • Stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) utilizes depth electrode implantation to identify epileptogenic zones in drug-resistant epilepsy.
  • Traditional methods include rigid frame-based, custom frameless, and robotic stereotactic systems for electrode placement.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the accuracy of the FHC microTargeting platform, a frameless system, for depth electrode implantation.
  • To evaluate the platform's efficacy without employing a rigid insertion cannula.

Main Methods:

  • 182 depth electrodes were implanted in 13 patients with drug-resistant epilepsy using the FHC microTargeting platform.
  • Stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) guided electrode placement without a rigid guide cannula.
  • MATLAB was used for targeting accuracy evaluation, averaging three manual coordinate measurements.

Main Results:

  • The median lateral target point localization error was 3.95 mm, and the total target point localization error was 4.95 mm.
  • A mean of 14 electrodes were implanted per patient with an average operative time of 144 minutes.
  • Three nonoperative hemorrhages occurred (2 subdural, 1 subarachnoid); seizure foci were identified in all patients.

Conclusions:

  • The FHC microTargeting platform is a safe, effective, and accurate tool for depth electrode implantation in SEEG.
  • The system enables successful localization of seizure foci without the need for insertion cannulae.
  • This frameless approach provides satisfactory accuracy for depth electrode placement in epilepsy surgery planning.
