Effect of the CPAP-SAVER Intervention on Adherence
1West Virginia University School of Nursing, Keyser, WV, USA.
Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) adherence in adults with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) was examined. The CPAP-SAVER intervention did not significantly improve adherence at one month but positively impacted patient beliefs and attitudes toward CPAP therapy.
Area of Science:
- Sleep Medicine
- Respiratory Medicine
- Behavioral Science
Background:
- Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent sleep-disordered breathing condition.
- Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the primary treatment, yet adherence remains a significant challenge.
- Poor CPAP adherence leads to increased comorbidities and healthcare burden.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy of the CPAP-SAVER intervention on CPAP adherence in adults newly diagnosed with OSA.
- To explore the intervention's impact on patients' beliefs and attitudes towards CPAP therapy.
Main Methods:
- A randomized controlled trial involving 66 participants with newly diagnosed OSA.
- Participants were assigned to either the CPAP-SAVER intervention group or a standard care group.
- Adherence, CPAP beliefs, and attitudes were assessed at one month using chi-square tests, t-tests, and correlations.
Main Results:
- No significant difference in CPAP adherence was observed between the intervention and standard care groups at the one-month follow-up.
- The intervention group demonstrated significantly higher CPAP beliefs and a significant increase in positive attitude towards CPAP.
- Practitioner focus on enhancing CPAP beliefs and attitudes may be crucial for improving adherence.
Conclusions:
- The CPAP-SAVER intervention showed potential in improving psychological factors related to CPAP use, although immediate adherence benefits were not significant.
- Further research with larger sample sizes is warranted to confirm generalizability and long-term effects.
- Findings suggest that interventions targeting patient beliefs and attitudes could form the basis of future OSA-CPAP adherence management protocols.
