Summary

Multispectral imaging shows promise for objectively assessing hand eczema severity by correlating with clinical scores. While not yet replacing dermatologists, this technology could aid in future hand eczema evaluations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate multispectral imaging for assessing hand eczema severity.
  • To correlate imaging data with extent and morphological features of hand eczema.

Main Methods:

  • Sixty patients with hand eczema and 28 controls underwent multispectral imaging.
  • Dermatologists assessed severity using the Hand Eczema Severity Index (HECSI) and Physician Global Assessment (PGA).
  • The VideometerLab Instrument was used for imaging.

Main Results:

  • Imaging-derived measurements of morphological elements correlated significantly with PGA scores.
  • Moderate agreement was found between imaging-based assessment and PGA (Cohen's kappa).
  • Imaging assessment also correlated with HECSI scores (Spearman rho 0.683).

Conclusions:

  • Multispectral imaging enables quantitative skin parameter measurement.
  • Current imaging technology cannot replace clinical dermatological assessment.
  • Refined imaging technologies may offer future utility in hand eczema evaluation.
