Summary

Erectile dysfunction (ED) patients show prolonged atrial electromechanical delay (AEMD), a precursor to atrial fibrillation (AF). This study suggests AEMD can identify ED patients at higher risk for developing AF.

  • 68 outpatients with vascular ED and 44 controls were enrolled.
  • International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) questionnaire assessed ED severity.
  • Tissue Doppler imaging measured intra- and inter-atrial electromechanical delay (AEMD); P-wave dispersion (PWD) was measured via ECG.

  • Patients with ED exhibited significantly prolonged PWD, inter-AEMD, and right intra-AEMD compared to controls.
  • ED severity (IIEF-5 score) negatively correlated with systolic blood pressure and AEMD parameters.

Conclusions:

  • Atrial electromechanical delay (AEMD) is significantly prolonged in patients with erectile dysfunction (ED).
  • AEMD correlates with ED severity and may help identify ED patients at high risk for future AF.
  • AEMD measurement offers a potentially cheap and easy method for AF risk stratification in ED patients.
