Summary

Post-menopausal oestrogen use was associated with a reduced risk of stroke mortality. This study found that women using hormone replacement therapy had a significantly lower chance of dying from stroke.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between post-menopausal oestrogen use and the risk of stroke mortality.

  • A postal questionnaire survey was used to collect data on oestrogen replacement therapy and risk factors.
  • A cohort of 13,986 women (median age 73) from a Californian retirement community was followed for mortality.
