Stable and bright perovskite light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were developed using optimized formamidinium lead iodide films. These solution-processable LEDs achieve high energy conversion efficiency and low efficiency droop, surpassing organic and quantum-dot LEDs.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Optoelectronics
- Solid-State Physics
Background:
- Solution-processable perovskites offer high emission and charge transport for efficient, low-cost light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
- Perovskite LED stability remains a significant challenge despite advances in device efficiency.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop stable and bright perovskite LEDs with high energy conversion efficiencies.
- To address the critical stability limitations of current perovskite LED technology.
Main Methods:
- Optimization of formamidinium lead iodide films for solution-processable perovskite LEDs.
- Control of precursor solution concentrations to enhance film quality and device performance.
Main Results:
- Achieved 10.7% energy conversion efficiency and 14.2% external quantum efficiency without outcoupling enhancement.
- Demonstrated low efficiency droop (8.3% energy conversion efficiency at 300 mA cm⁻²), outperforming state-of-the-art organic and quantum-dot LEDs at high current densities.
- Reported a half-lifetime of 23.7 hours at 100 mA cm⁻² with benzylamine treatment, comparable to near-infrared organic LEDs.
Conclusions:
- Optimized formamidinium lead iodide films enable stable, high-efficiency perovskite LEDs.
- These findings present a viable pathway for commercializing perovskite-based lighting and display technologies.
- The developed perovskite LEDs show competitive performance against established technologies, especially at high operating current densities.
