New oncogenic signalling pathway: EWS-Oct4 mediates bone and soft tissue tumourigenesis by activating fibroblast

Abstract:
Chromosomal translocations involving the interchange of parts between two non-homologous chromosomes can often lead to cancer by creating new fusion proteins. Here, Kim and co-workers show that a chimeric protein, EWS-Oct-4, transcriptionally activates fibroblast growth factor-4 (FGF-4) and triggers a downstream cascade of oncogenic signalling pathways, thereby facilitating the initiation of human bone and soft tissue tumour development. Interactions Between Signaling Pathways
Convergence and divergence, and cross-talk between signaling pathways
Two distinct signaling pathways can converge on a single functional unit, which may either be a single protein or a complex of proteins. The response is either functionally distinct or synergistic between the two pathways but different from the response...
Notch Signaling Pathway
The Notch gene came into the limelight in 1914 after the discovery that its mutation in Drosophila melanogaster leads to a serrated (or "notched") wing margin phenotype. It was not...
