Background:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects approximately 70% of stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA) patients.
  • OSA is linked to poorer functional recovery and increased risk of recurrent vascular events.
  • Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) can improve outcomes but has low adherence rates.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and pilot-test educational materials for OSA in poststroke/TIA patients.
  • To assess the feasibility and understandability of these educational interventions.
  • To evaluate the impact on patient knowledge, sleepiness, functional outcomes, and CPAP use.

Main Methods:

  • A blinded pilot study randomized stroke/TIA patients into an intervention group (educational materials) or a control group (standard care).
  • Patient feedback was collected on the educational materials' usefulness and clarity.
  • Outcomes including knowledge, daytime sleepiness, functional status, and CPAP usage were measured at baseline and 6 months.

Main Results:

  • The educational materials were rated as useful and easy to understand by the intervention group.
