Correlation between Osteoprotegerin Levels and Antiphospholipid Syndrome Parameters

Background:

• Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune disorder associated with an increased risk of thrombosis and pregnancy morbidity.
• Osteoprotegerin (OPG) is a protein involved in bone metabolism and vascular calcification, and its role in APS is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

• To investigate the correlation between osteoprotegerin (OPG) levels and various parameters in patients with antiphospholipid syndrome (APS).
• To examine the relationship between OPG, antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs), and clinical manifestations in APS, particularly in patients with co-existing systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Main Methods:

• A cohort of 40 patients with primary APS associated with SLE was studied.
• Serum OPG levels, 10 criteria and noncriteria antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs), and cardiovascular risk factors were assessed.
• Correlation analysis was performed between OPG levels and APS parameters, including aPLs and clinical events.

Main Results:

• Elevated serum OPG levels were observed in 65% of patients with APS, frequently associated with overweight status.
• In patients with SLE, OPG levels showed a positive association with anti-double-stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA) and anti-Sm antibody titers.
• No significant correlation was found between OPG levels and any of the tested antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs) or venous APS events.

Conclusions:

• High serum OPG levels are prevalent in APS patients, especially those with SLE.
• OPG levels in APS are not directly linked to the presence or titer of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs).
• The findings suggest that OPG may be associated with SLE activity rather than aPL expression in APS.
