Cancer Vaccines

978
Cancer treatment vaccines are a rapidly evolving field that offers a promising approach to immunotherapy. Unlike traditional vaccines that prevent diseases, cancer treatment vaccines are designed to treat existing cancers by stimulating the immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells.
Cancer vaccines come in two categories: preventive (prophylactic) and treatment (active). Preventive vaccines, such as the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, protect against viruses that cause certain...

Types of Biopharmaceutical Studies: Controlled and Non-Controlled Approaches

412
Biopharmaceutical studies constitute a vital field aiming to enhance drug delivery methods and refine therapeutic approaches, drawing upon diverse interdisciplinary knowledge. In research methodologies, the choice between controlled and non-controlled studies significantly influences the study's reliability and accuracy.
Non-controlled studies, commonly employed for initial exploration, lack a control group, rendering them susceptible to biases and external influences. In contrast,...

Overview of Connective Tissues Proper

9.7K
Connective tissue proper is a class of connective tissue that encompasses all mature connective tissues except bone, cartilage, blood, and lymph. This extensive class of tissues has two subclasses — loose and dense connective tissues — classified based on the protein fiber arrangement and the amount of ground substance.
The loose connective tissues have a meshwork of thin collagen and elastin fibers, which provide tensile strength for support and enough elasticity to move...

Layers of Connective Tissue Proper

3.4K
Fascia, a thin layer of fibrous connective tissue, is distributed throughout the body. It demarcates and forms a supportive covering over skeletal muscles, bones, blood vessels, and organs. There are three main types of facia— superficial fascia, deep fascia, and subserous fascia. These are all present at different depths in the body. Fascia reduces the friction and permits muscles, joints, and organs to easily slide against each other, facilitating movement of the body and preventing...

Increased Body Temperature01:25

Increased Body Temperature

6.4K
A body temperature above  38°C  (100.4 °F) is known as fever or pyrexia, and a person with fever is termed 'febrile.' Typically, the hypothalamus, a part of the brain that acts as the body's thermostat, regulates body temperature through a thermoregulatory setpoint. It receives signals from cold and warm thermal receptors throughout the body and adjusts the body's temperature accordingly. Fever occurs when this hypothalamic setpoint is altered, usually in...

Summary

Proper vaccination against pertussis (whooping cough) did not prevent illness in a study of children aged 8-16. This suggests current vaccination schedules may require review for improved pertussis protection.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatrics
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Pertussis (whooping cough) remains a concern despite vaccination efforts.
  • Vaccination coverage (VC) in primary care centers (PCCs) can be influenced by management practices.
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of pertussis vaccination is crucial for public health strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess vaccination coverage (VC) against pertussis in children aged 8-16 years.
  • To determine if proper pertussis vaccination status (DTaP/dTap) correlates with protection against the illness.
  • To investigate factors influencing VC in primary care settings.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study was conducted from 2011-2015 in Barcelona, Spain, involving 52 PCCs.
  • Pertussis cases (laboratory-confirmed) were compared with healthy controls.
  • Vaccination status (DTaP/dTap doses) was recorded, and logistic regression was used to analyze data.

Main Results:

  • A total of 229 pertussis cases and 576 controls were included.
  • Higher VC was observed in pertussis cases (mean 5.01) compared to controls (4.89).
  • Properly vaccinated children showed no significant protection against pertussis (OR 1.87; 95% CI 1.22-2.85).

Conclusions:

  • The study found no evidence that being properly vaccinated against pertussis protects children from developing the illness.
  • Higher VC in cases might be due to more thorough follow-up of vaccination records in sick children.
  • Findings suggest a potential need to re-evaluate current pertussis vaccination strategies and schedules.
