The Vestibular System01:29

The Vestibular System

43.5K
The vestibular system is a set of inner ear structures that provide a sense of balance and spatial orientation. This system is comprised of structures within the labyrinth of the inner ear, including the cochlea and two otolith organs—the utricle and saccule. The labyrinth also contains three semicircular canals—superior, posterior, and horizontal—that are oriented on different planes.

What is Population Genetics?01:25

What is Population Genetics?

64.5K
A population is composed of members of the same species that simultaneously live and interact in the same area. When individuals in a population breed, they pass down their genes to their offspring. Many of these genes are polymorphic, meaning that they occur in multiple variants. Such variations of a gene are referred to as alleles. The collective set of all the alleles within a population is known as the gene pool.

Animal Mitochondrial Genetics02:59

Animal Mitochondrial Genetics

9.0K
Among all the organelles in an animal cell, only mitochondria have their own independent genomes. Animal mitochondrial DNA is a double-stranded, closed-circular molecule with around 20,000 base pairs. Mitochondrial DNA is unique in that one of its two strands, the heavy, or H, -strand is guanine rich, whereas the complementary strand is cytosine rich and called the light, or L, -strand. Compared to nuclear DNA, mitochondrial DNA has a very low percentage of non-coding regions and is marked by...

Types of Genetic Transfer Between Organisms02:18

Types of Genetic Transfer Between Organisms

30.6K
Genetic transfer occurs when genetic information is passed from one organism to another. It occurs via two mechanisms: vertical gene transfer and horizontal gene transfer. Vertical gene transfer occurs when genetic information is transferred from one generation to the next, which happens much more frequently than horizontal gene transfer. Both sexual and asexual reproduction are forms of vertical gene transfer, where one or more organisms pass some or all of their genome onto their progeny.

Background:

  • Vestibular migraine (VM) is a neurological condition characterized by vertigo, dizziness, and balance issues alongside migraine headaches.
  • The precise pathophysiological mechanisms underlying VM remain largely unknown.
  • Familial occurrences suggest a potential genetic predisposition to VM.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review and summarize the current molecular genetic studies on vestibular migraine.
  • To explore the potential genetic underpinnings of VM based on recent research.
  • To highlight the significance of genetic research in understanding VM's etiology.

Main Methods:

  • Literature search of molecular genetic studies related to vestibular migraine.
  • Synthesis and analysis of findings from identified genetic research papers.
  • Review of studies investigating genetic components and familial occurrences of VM.

Main Results:

  • Recent advancements in molecular genetics have spurred research into VM.
  • Genetic studies are beginning to shed light on the potential causes of VM.
  • The review consolidates current knowledge on genetic factors implicated in VM.

Conclusions:

  • Molecular genetic research is crucial for unraveling the causes of vestibular migraine.
  • Further genetic investigations are needed to fully understand VM's pathophysiology.
  • Identifying genetic links may lead to improved diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for VM.
