A new automated kiosk accurately measures the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) in older adults. This validated eSPPB kiosk offers a viable and efficient method for assessing physical function in geriatric populations.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Rehabilitation Medicine
- Biomedical Engineering
Background:
- The Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) is a crucial tool for assessing physical function in older adults.
- Manual SPPB (mSPPB) assessment requires trained personnel, potentially limiting its widespread application.
- Automated assessment methods could enhance efficiency and accessibility of SPPB measurements.
Purpose of the Study:
- To validate a novel multi-sensor-based kiosk, termed the automatically measured SPPB (eSPPB) kiosk, for automated SPPB measurement.
- To assess the correlation between the eSPPB kiosk's measurements and the manually measured SPPB (mSPPB).
- To evaluate the relationship between SPPB parameters and other geriatric functional measures.
Main Methods:
- A prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted with 40 ambulatory outpatients aged 65 years and older.
- The eSPPB kiosk was developed with embedded sensors and algorithms to measure standing balance, gait speed, and chair stand test.
- Correlation analyses were performed between eSPPB and mSPPB total and component scores, as well as with other geriatric functional measures.
Main Results:
- The study included 40 participants with a mean age of 74.4 years.
- High intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were found between eSPPB and mSPPB total scores (ICC=0.97, P<.001) and component scores (standing balance ICC=0.77, gait speed ICC=0.88, chair stand ICC=0.99).
- Excellent agreement was observed between eSPPB and mSPPB (κ=0.79, P<.001).
Conclusions:
- The newly developed eSPPB kiosk demonstrates high validity and reliability compared to manual SPPB assessment.
- The eSPPB kiosk presents a viable and efficient method for automated physical performance testing in older adults.
- This technology has the potential to streamline geriatric functional assessments in clinical settings.
