Summary

Hepatolithiasis, or liver stones, are rare in the West. This study found brown pigment stones primarily in peripheral intrahepatic bile ducts, suggesting a potential origin site for these liver calculi.

Background:

  • Hepatolithiasis (intrahepatic bile duct stones) is prevalent in East Asia but uncommon globally.
  • Previous studies often focused on stones in major intrahepatic or extrahepatic bile ducts.
  • The origin and development of stones in peripheral intrahepatic bile ducts remain less understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe and characterize cases of hepatolithiasis involving peripheral intrahepatic biliary tree branches.
  • To compare these peripheral calculi findings with those typically seen in major intrahepatic biliary tree stones.
  • To investigate the potential origin of brown pigment stones within the liver.
