Abstract:
Nocardia subretinal abscess is a rare complication of nocardiosis with typically poor visual outcomes. We present a case of a large submacular abscess that responded favorably to early, frequent intravitreal amikacin along with systemic antibiotic therapy.
Insights
Nocardia subretinal abscess, a rare cause of vision loss, can be treated effectively. Early intravitreal amikacin combined with systemic antibiotics offers a favorable outcome for this condition.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Infectious Diseases
- Microbiology
Background:
- Subretinal abscesses caused by Nocardia are uncommon ocular infections.
- Nocardia infections often lead to poor visual prognosis.
Purpose of the Study:
- To report a case of a large submacular Nocardia abscess.
- To evaluate the efficacy of early, frequent intravitreal amikacin and systemic antibiotics.
Main Methods:
- A case study of a patient with a large submacular Nocardia abscess.
- Treatment involved frequent intravitreal injections of amikacin and systemic antibiotic administration.
Main Results:
- The submacular abscess showed a favorable response to the combined treatment.
- Visual outcomes improved following the intervention.
Conclusions:
- Early and frequent intravitreal amikacin, alongside systemic antibiotics, can be an effective treatment for Nocardia subretinal abscess.
- This approach may improve visual outcomes in cases of Nocardia endophthalmitis.
