Summary

Chronic thyroid hormone excess, or hyperthyroidism, increases pituitary gonadotroph sensitivity to gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). This heightened response may explain enhanced Leydig cell function in hyperthyroid men.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of chronic thyroid hormone excess on the pituitary-gonadal axis in men.
  • To assess the responsiveness of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and testosterone (T) to gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) in hyperthyroid versus euthyroid states.

Main Methods:

  • Eight hyperthyroid men underwent two identical intravenous GnRH stimulation tests.
  • The first test was conducted in a hyperthyroid state, and the second after achieving euthyroid status through medical treatment.

    • Basal LH, FSH, and T levels were comparable before and after treatment.

    Conclusions:

    • Chronic thyroid hormone excess appears to induce 'hypersensitivity' of pituitary gonadotrophs to exogenous GnRH.
    • This pituitary hypersensitivity may contribute to enhanced Leydig cell responsiveness observed in thyrotoxic patients.
