Cyber Dating Abuse Victimization: Links With Psychosocial Functioning

Cyber dating abuse (CDA) uniquely impacts alcohol use and fear of partner, even when controlling for intimate partner violence (IPV). However, CDA does not uniquely predict other psychosocial issues beyond existing in-person IPV.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Sociology
- Criminology
Background:
- Intimate partner violence (IPV) is recognized as a significant issue, with technology increasingly used to perpetrate abuse.
- Cyber dating abuse (CDA) is a growing concern, but its unique impact on psychosocial functioning, independent of in-person IPV, is not well understood.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the unique associations between cyber dating abuse (CDA) victimization and psychosocial well-being.
- To control for multiple forms of in-person intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization when examining CDA's effects.
Main Methods:
- Survey study involving 278 young adults (ages 17-25) in relationships.
- Participants completed questionnaires assessing IPV, CDA victimization, and psychosocial well-being indicators.
Main Results:
- CDA victimization was uniquely associated with increased alcohol use (men and women) and fear of partner (women), even after accounting for in-person IPV.
- CDA did not uniquely predict depression, perceived stress, relationship satisfaction, quality of life, social support, or post-traumatic stress beyond in-person IPV.
Conclusions:
- While CDA has some unique psychosocial impacts, it frequently co-occurs with in-person IPV.
- Prevention and treatment efforts should prioritize addressing broader patterns of abuse, including in-person IPV, rather than focusing solely on CDA.
