Background:

  • Flexible, self-powered sensors are crucial for applications in sports, robotics, healthcare, and communication.
  • Accurate vibration measurement is essential for assessing mechanical properties, particularly string tension.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a flexible, lightweight, and self-powered sensor for measuring string vibration characteristics.
  • To optimize the fabrication of poly(vinylidene) fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers on a liquid crystal polymer (LCP) substrate.

Main Methods:

  • Electrospinning of PVDF nanofibers onto an LCP substrate.
  • Optimization of electrospinning parameters (needle size, flow rate).
  • Characterization of the sensor in a cantilever configuration and comparison with a Laser Displacement Sensor (LDS).

Main Results:

  • The developed PVDF sensor accurately measures frequency and strain.
  • Results showed good resemblance (±0.2%) with a commercial LDS.
  • A linear voltage profile (0.2 mV/με) was observed.

Conclusions:

  • The flexible PVDF sensor is capable of measuring vibration characteristics in strings.
  • The sensor demonstrated reliable performance in measuring single impacts and sinusoidal vibrations on racket strings.
  • This piezoelectric sensor presents a novel application for vibration analysis.
