Practicing Child Psychiatry in the Era of Facebook Parenting Groups

Abstract:
Early in an appointment, a mother announced that she had learned in her Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD) Parenting Facebook group that stimulants worsen behavior in the DMDD population. Against her pediatrician's advice, she discontinued her son's long-acting and short-acting agents, despite no prior history of adverse effects. In recent weeks, I have met with multiple parents like her who, after hearing from peers in diagnosis-specific Facebook parenting groups, adjusted their children's medications on their own or have asked for specific medications by name.
