Summary

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) may link vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia (VBD) with lacunar infarction (LI) and white matter hyperintensities (WMH). Higher MMP-9 and TIMP-1 levels correlate with arterial changes in vertigo patients.

A Versatile Murine Model of Subcortical White Matter Stroke for the Study of Axonal Degeneration and White Matter Neurobiology

Here we present methodology for the production of a focal stroke in murine white matter by local injection of an irreversible endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) inhibitor (L-Nio). Presented are two stereotactic variations, retrograde neuronal tracing, and fresh tissue labeling and dissection that expand the potential applications of this...

Recording of Inward Rectifying K+ Currents in Freshly Isolated Basilar Artery Smooth Muscle Cells by Patch Clamp Technique

This protocol describes a rapid and efficient method for isolating smooth muscle cells from the rat basilar artery and recording inward rectifying potassium channel currents in these cells using the whole-cell patch clamp technique. It offers a novel approach for researchers studying the basilar artery and ion...

DTI of the Visual Pathway - White Matter Tracts and Cerebral Lesions

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) was performed to try to depict the major parts of the visual pathway. The goal was to use an FDA approved standard commercial workstation which could be used for everyday routine in order to try to reduce postoperative damage of the visual pathway in the...

Inducing White Matter Stroke in a Murine Model Using a Nitric Oxide Inhibitor

This video demonstrates the precise technique for inducing a white matter stroke in an anesthetized mouse by injecting a nitric oxide inhibitor at targeted brain coordinates within the white matter. This leads to blood vessel constriction and inhibition of blood supply, resulting in neuronal damage and a brain...

Classifying Matter by State

Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes it undergoes. Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. Matter is all around us; the air, water, soil, mountains, even our bodies are all examples of matter. Matter is divided into three states — solid, liquid, and gas — that are commonly found on earth. The fourth state of matter, plasma, occurs naturally in the interiors of stars.

Classifying Matter by Composition

Matter: Pure Substances and Mixtures
According to its composition, the matter can be classified into two broad categories — pure substances and mixtures.
A pure substance is a form of matter that has a constant composition throughout with uniform properties. For example, any sample of sucrose has the same composition and same physical properties, such as melting point, color, and sweetness, regardless of the source from which it is isolated.
A mixture is composed of two or...
