Appendicitis-I: Introduction
Carcinoid tumors of appendix presenting as acute appendicitis
1Department of General Surgery, İnönü University Faculty of Medicine, Malatya-Turkey.
Appendiceal carcinoid tumors are rare findings during appendectomy for acute appendicitis. These tumors, when small and non-perforated, have an excellent prognosis with no recurrences observed in this study.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Surgical Pathology
- Oncology
Background:
- Appendiceal carcinoid tumors are rare and often asymptomatic.
- They are typically discovered incidentally during histopathological examination after appendectomy for acute appendicitis.
Purpose of the Study:
- To present data on patients who underwent appendectomy for acute appendicitis and were incidentally found to have carcinoid tumors.
- To analyze the characteristics and outcomes of appendiceal carcinoid tumors.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of patient charts from January 1999 to September 2018.
- Inclusion of patients who underwent appendectomy for acute appendicitis and were diagnosed with carcinoid tumors.
Main Results:
- 12 out of 2778 appendectomies (0.43%) revealed carcinoid tumors.
- The median tumor size was 0.7 cm, with no perforations detected.
- Most patients (11/12) underwent appendectomy; one had a right hemicolectomy. No recurrences were observed during a median follow-up of 41.5 months.
Conclusions:
- Appendix carcinoid tumors are rare, usually asymptomatic, and diagnosed incidentally.
- Treatment and prognosis depend on tumor size, invasion, and mitotic rate.
- The prognosis is excellent for non-perforated tumors, emphasizing the importance of histopathological review.

Diagnosing Appendicitis
It requires a multifaceted approach, starting with a detailed physical examination to pinpoint the location and nature of the pain and identify any associated symptoms. Laboratory tests play a crucial role. A complete Blood Count (CBC) typically reveals leukocytosis (an increased number of...
Abdominal Exam IV: Acute Abdominal Pain Assessment
Abdominal pain is a frequent presenting concern in both the emergency department and the office setting. Acute abdominal pain is defined as pain lasting less than seven days, while an acute abdomen refers to the abrupt onset of severe abdominal pain with features suggesting a surgically intervenable process. The differential diagnosis of acute abdominal pain is broad; thus, clinicians must have a...
