Summary

Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) and rhinitis of pregnancy are real conditions, with 80% of symptomatic pregnant women experiencing ETD. Symptoms resolve postpartum, but prior ear issues and smoking increase risk.

Background:

  • Pregnancy is often associated with nasal and ear symptoms, commonly termed "rhinitis of pregnancy."
  • Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) is a potential contributor to these symptoms during gestation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively investigate the prevalence and characteristics of ETD and rhinitis of pregnancy.
  • To compare symptomatic pregnant women with asymptomatic pregnant women and non-pregnant controls.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized sonotubometry, nine-step inflation-deflation tympanometry, and computer-assisted anterior rhinomanometry.
  • Compared 20 symptomatic pregnant women with 20 asymptomatic pregnant women and 20 non-pregnant controls.
