Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Public Health
- General Practice
Background:
- The 2019 Cardiovascular Risk Management (CVRM) guideline addresses the need for updated strategies in preventing cardiovascular disease.
- It integrates diagnostics and therapeutic measures within a new risk category classification.
Purpose of the Study:
- To present the comprehensive multidisciplinary guideline for Cardiovascular Risk Management (CVRM).
- To outline revised approaches to cardiovascular disease prevention, including lifestyle modifications and target values.
Main Methods:
- Development of a multidisciplinary guideline incorporating diagnostics and preventive measures.
- Introduction of a novel classification system for cardiovascular risk categories.
- Revision of target values for blood pressure and cholesterol, with special consideration for the elderly.
Main Results:
- The guideline emphasizes lifestyle as the cornerstone of treatment.
- Revised target values for blood pressure and cholesterol are presented.
- A focus on the elderly and population-level measures is included, advocating a programmatic approach in primary care for high-risk individuals.
Conclusions:
- The CVRM guideline provides a comprehensive framework for cardiovascular disease prevention.
- It highlights the importance of patient engagement through information and individualized care plans.
- Primary care is recommended to adopt a programmatic strategy for managing high-risk patients.
Abstract:
The multidisciplinary guideline 'Cardiovascular risk management'(CVRM) appeared in March 2019. It has also been published in the form of a Dutch College of General Practitioners guideline. The CVRM guideline describes the whole spectrum of diagnostics and measures to prevent cardiovascular disease. The guideline also introduces a new classification of risk categories. Lifestyle remains the basis of treatment. Target values for blood pressure and cholesterol have been revised, and there is a specific focus on the elderly. The guideline also concentrates on measures at population level and recommends that primary care should take a programmatic approach to those people at high or very high risk. Working with the patient through the provision of good information and an individual care plan is essential for this.
