Carbimazole, an antithyroid drug, can rarely cause anaphylactic shock, a severe allergic reaction. Patients treated for thyrotoxicosis should be informed of this rare but serious side effect.
Area of Science:
- Endocrinology
- Pharmacology
- Allergy and Immunology
Background:
- Carbimazole is a commonly prescribed antithyroid medication.
- Anaphylactic shock is a rare but life-threatening adverse drug reaction.
Purpose of the Study:
- To report a rare case of anaphylactic shock induced by carbimazole.
- To highlight the importance of patient counseling regarding rare side effects of carbimazole.
Main Methods:
- Case report of a 40-year-old female patient treated for thyrotoxicosis.
- Observation of anaphylactic shock symptoms after a single dose of carbimazole.
Main Results:
- The patient presented with sweating, shortness of breath, and altered sensorium after carbimazole administration.
- The patient was successfully treated for anaphylactic shock.
Conclusions:
- Carbimazole can induce anaphylactic shock without preceding allergic manifestations.
- Awareness and prompt medical attention are crucial for managing rare adverse drug reactions like carbimazole-induced anaphylaxis.
