Background:

  • Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease primarily affecting the spine.
  • Psychological disorders like anxiety and depression are known comorbidities in AS patients.
  • The role of impulsivity and its relationship with disease parameters in AS requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate psychological disorders, including impulsivity, alexithymia, depression, and anxiety, in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients.
  • To analyze the associations between these psychiatric disorders and disease activity, fatigue, and quality of life in AS.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study involving 70 AS patients and 56 healthy controls.
  • Assessment of demographic characteristics, laboratory analyses, disease activity (ASDAS, BASFI, BASMI), quality of life (NHP, ASQOL), fatigue (FSS), and psychological disorders (BDI, BAI, TAS-20, EAT, BIS-11).
  • Multivariate analyses were employed to identify significant predictors for anxiety, depression, and impulsiveness.

Conclusions:

  • Impulsivity emerges as a notable psychiatric disorder associated with ankylosing spondylitis, alongside anxiety and depression.
  • Fatigue is identified as a critical factor contributing to increased impulsivity in AS patients.
  • Targeting fatigue may be a crucial strategy for managing impulsivity in individuals with AS.
