Quantifying Pain Location and Intensity with Multimodal Pain Body Diagrams09:00

Quantifying Pain Location and Intensity with Multimodal Pain Body Diagrams

4.4K
Current pain scales used to quantify pain severity, such as visual analog scales, fail to capture the complexity of subjective pain experiences. Pain body diagrams are qualitative but may be more informative. The goal of this method is to extract quantitative metrics from pain body diagrams using novel pressure-hue...

This paper details the creation of a Psoriasis Thickness Reference Card, enabling psoriasis patients to self-assess their psoriasis plaque thickness without the need for physician assistance. Additionally, the precision of self-assessment for psoriasis redness and scaliness by employing reference images depicting various skin tones is...

Student t Distribution01:31

Student t Distribution

13.6K
The population standard deviation is rarely known in many day-to-day examples of statistics. When the sample sizes are large, it is easy to estimate the population standard deviation using a confidence interval, which provides results close enough to the original value. However, statisticians ran into problems when the sample size was small. A small sample size caused inaccuracies in the confidence interval.
The Student t distribution was developed by William S. Goset (1876–1937) of the...

Microsoft Excel: Student's t-Test

1.6K
Student's t-test in Microsoft Excel is a statistical method used to compare the means of two groups to determine if they are significantly different from each other. It's commonly used to evaluate hypotheses, such as testing whether a treatment has an effect compared to a control group. Excel provides built-in functions to perform t-tests, making it accessible for users needing to conduct basic statistical analysis.
To conduct a t-test in Excel, use the T.TEST function or the "Data...

Comparing Experimental Results: Student's t-Test

5.0K
The t-test is a statistical method used to compare the sample mean with a population mean or compare two means from two data sets. The test statistic is calculated from the standard deviation, mean, and number of measurements in the data set at a selected confidence interval and then compared to a table of critical values at this confidence level. If the test statistic is smaller than the critical value, the null hypothesis is accepted. In this case, we state that the difference between the...

Summary

Veteran students experience severe pain more often than nonveteran students, impacting their daily activities. Targeted support is needed to address pain management challenges for veteran students in higher education.

Area of Science:

  • Health Sciences
  • Education
  • Veterans Affairs

Background:

  • Severe pain affects a significant portion of military veterans.
  • Veteran students encounter substantial obstacles in achieving academic success.
  • Understanding pain's impact on veteran students' learning is crucial for advocacy and promoting inclusivity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the prevalence and severity of pain in veteran students versus nonveteran students.
  • To assess the impact of pain on daily functioning for veteran students.
  • To evaluate the availability of resources for pain management among veteran students.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional, non-experimental survey design was employed.
  • The survey comprised six questions adapted from the National Health Interview Survey.
  • Data collection was facilitated through the SurveyGizmo platform.

Main Results:

  • Veteran students were 4.3 times more likely to report severe pain compared to nonveteran students.
  • 98.6% of veteran students reported experiencing pain, with 22.2% experiencing severe pain.
  • 25% of veteran students reported pain limiting their daily work, and only 4.2% found sufficient on-campus resources for pain management.

Conclusions:

  • Veteran students exhibit statistically significantly higher rates of severe pain.
  • Pain substantially limits the daily work of veteran students, who report fewer coping resources.
  • Findings can guide physical therapists' advocacy and inform culturally competent educational assessments.
