Kidney Structure

74.9K
The kidneys are two large bean-shaped organs located in the upper abdomen. They filter the blood several times a day to remove toxins and rebalance water and electrolytes of the circulatory system via the renal veins. The kidneys receive blood directly from the heart via the renal arteries. These arteries enter the kidney at the hilum, the concave surface of the bean, where they branch and divide into smaller vessels and capillaries.

Fabricating a Kidney Cortex Extracellular Matrix-Derived Hydrogel

10.9K
Here we present a protocol to fabricate a kidney cortex extracellular matrix-derived hydrogel to retain the native kidney extracellular matrix (ECM) structural and biochemical composition. The fabrication process and its applications are described. Finally, a perspective on using this hydrogel to support kidney-specific cellular and tissue regeneration and bioengineering is...

A Modified Surgical Technique for Kidney Transplantation in Mice

7.1K
This protocol presents a new surgical technique of mouse kidney transplantation focusing on a modified arterial anastomosis strategy. A vascular suture technique including a simple and safer ureter-bladder anastomosis method is also presented. These modifications shorten the operation time and improve the success rate of the mouse kidney transplantation...

Normothermic Ex Vivo Kidney Perfusion for the Preservation of Kidney Grafts prior to Transplantation08:12

Normothermic Ex Vivo Kidney Perfusion for the Preservation of Kidney Grafts prior to Transplantation

19.8K
The severe organ shortage has resulted in increased use of marginal kidney grafts for transplantation. This has triggered interest in alternative storage methods, since marginal grafts especially tolerate cold storage poorly. The technique of normothermic ex vivo kidney perfusion (NEVKP) represents a novel preservation method for kidney grafts prior to...

Summary

Pancake kidney, a rare congenital fusion of renal parenchyma, presents as a single pelvic mass. This case highlights a non-symptomatic presentation managed conservatively, avoiding invasive procedures.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Pediatric Urology
  • Congenital Anomalies

Background:

  • Pancake kidney is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by the complete fusion of medial renal parenchyma, forming a single lobulated mass.
  • Despite fusion, dual collecting systems and normally entering ureters are retained, though anomalous rotation can lead to complications.
  • This condition is often incidentally discovered and may increase susceptibility to urinary tract infections or stone formation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present a case of a male patient with a pelvic pancake kidney.
  • To discuss the management of a non-symptomatic pancake kidney.
  • To emphasize a conservative approach in managing incidentally discovered pancake kidney.

Main Methods:

  • Case report of a male patient with pelvic pancake kidney.
  • Review of diagnostic imaging modalities including ultrasonography, CT, MRI, and radionucleotide scanning.
  • Conservative management including regular follow-up and laboratory testing.

Main Results:

  • The patient presented with a non-symptomatic pelvic pancake kidney.
  • A conservative approach was elected, involving regular follow-up visits and laboratory testing.
  • Unnecessary investigations and extensive surgery were avoided.

Conclusions:

  • Pancake kidney, though rare, can present asymptomatically.
  • A conservative management strategy is appropriate for non-symptomatic pancake kidney cases.
  • Regular monitoring can effectively manage this condition without invasive interventions.
