Focal Laser Ablation of Prostate Cancer: An Office Procedure11:07

Focal Laser Ablation of Prostate Cancer: An Office Procedure

8.4K
This article presents and describes an outpatient treatment for prostate cancer using focal laser ablation. Laser catheter placement is guided by MRI-ultrasound fusion imaging in a fashion similar to prostate needle biopsy. Treatment is monitored in real-time with a thermal probe, placed adjacent to the laser fiber.

Self-Discrepancy Theory

18.9K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Isolation of Cancer Stem Cells From Human Prostate Cancer Samples

14.6K
The isolation of cancer stem cells (CSCs) directly from human tissues is requisite for their biological characterization. This manuscript describes a methodology for the isolation of prostate CSCs from human tissues, while also providing tips on troubleshooting difficult...

An Orthotopic Murine Model of Human Prostate Cancer Metastasis

35.8K
This orthotopic model of human prostate cancer allows for quantification of tumor size, circulating tumor cells, and formation of distinct metastasis to the lung. As cells must escape the primary organ, enter the blood stream, and implant into a secondary site, this model effectively recapitulates the scenario in...

Intra-prostatic Injection of Cancer Cells: A Technique to Deliver Cancer Cells for Establishing Orthotopic Prostate Cancer Mouse Model

5.6K
In this video, we demonstrate the procedure for administering intra-prostatic injection of prostate cancer cells into a mouse model. Orthotopic murine models can be used to study the disease origin and response to treatment therapies in a non-invasive and clinically relevant...

Pre-clinical Orthotopic Murine Model of Human Prostate Cancer07:01

Pre-clinical Orthotopic Murine Model of Human Prostate Cancer

15.0K
Prostate cancer is the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. An orthotopic cancer model provides a useful approach to understand the biology of prostate cancer and to evaluate the efficacy of therapeutic regimens. This protocol describes detailed steps necessary to establish an orthotopic prostate cancer mouse...

Summary

One in three men experienced worse sexual side effects after prostate cancer treatment than expected. Improving pre-treatment information, especially using brochures, can enhance patient expectations regarding sexual side effects.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Urology
  • Patient Education

Background:

  • Prostate cancer treatments can cause sexual side effects.
  • Patient understanding of these side effects may influence satisfaction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Evaluate discrepancies between patient expectations and actual sexual side effects after prostate cancer treatment.
  • Identify factors influencing the accuracy of these expectations.

Main Methods:

  • Multicenter, cross-sectional survey of 412 men treated for prostate cancer.
  • Data collected on treatment type, clinical factors, and experienced sexual side effects compared to expectations.

Main Results:

  • 32.5% of men reported sexual side effects worse than expected.
  • Surgical treatment, local stage tumors, and lower PSA levels were associated with greater discrepancies.
  • Radiotherapy with hormonal therapy and use of brochures were associated with fewer discrepancies.

Conclusions:

  • A significant number of men have unmet expectations regarding sexual side effects post-prostate cancer treatment.
  • Treatment type and clinical factors impact expectation accuracy.
  • Integrating brochures into patient education can improve understanding and align expectations with outcomes.
