Improving posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms was linked to better antidepressant medication (ADM) adherence in veterans. This suggests PTSD symptom reduction may improve depression outcomes.
Area of Science:
- Mental Health
- Pharmacology
- Clinical Research
Background:
- Patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often exhibit poor antidepressant medication (ADM) adherence.
- The relationship between PTSD symptom improvement and ADM adherence is not well-established.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine if clinically significant reductions in PTSD symptoms are associated with improved ADM adherence.
- To investigate the impact of PTSD symptom reduction on medication adherence in a veteran population.
Main Methods:
- Utilized electronic health records from 742 Veterans Health Affairs (VHA) patients diagnosed with PTSD.
- Defined clinically meaningful PTSD symptom reduction as a decrease of ≥20 points on the PTSD Checklist (PCL).
- Employed propensity score and inverse probability of treatment weighting to control for confounding variables.
Main Results:
- Patients achieving clinically meaningful PTSD symptom reduction were significantly more likely to be adherent to ADM (OR=1.78).
- Despite this association, overall ADM adherence remained low in both groups (53.5% with reduction vs. 39.3% without).
Conclusions:
- Substantial reductions in PTSD symptoms are associated with improved ADM adherence.
- This association may contribute to better depression outcomes, as suggested by prior research.
