A rare Staphylococcus aureus infection of a proximal aortic graft occurred 7 years post-surgery. Despite initial medical treatment, urgent surgery was required for successful graft reimplantation and patient recovery.
Area of Science:
- Cardiovascular Surgery
- Infectious Diseases
- Medical Microbiology
Background:
- Proximal aortic graft infections are severe complications following aortic surgery.
- High mortality and reinfection rates persist despite current treatment protocols.
Observation:
- A 71-year-old male presented with a large Staphylococcus aureus periprosthetic abscess 7 years after a modified Bentall procedure.
- Initial treatment with high-dose intravenous flucloxacillin and oral rifampicin failed to resolve the abscess.
Findings:
- The patient underwent urgent surgical excision and graft reimplantation.
- Successful surgical intervention led to complete recovery and independence.
Implications:
- This case highlights the potential for late-presenting aortic graft infections.
- Successful management of complex aortic graft infections may be achieved through timely surgical intervention.
- Further research into novel antimicrobial strategies and graft materials is warranted.
