Multispectral Real-time Fluorescence Imaging for Intraoperative Detection of the Sentinel Lymph Node in Gynecologic Oncology06:37

Multispectral Real-time Fluorescence Imaging for Intraoperative Detection of the Sentinel Lymph Node in Gynecologic Oncology

23.8K
Fluorescence imaging is a promising innovative modality for image-guided surgery in surgical oncology. In this video we describe the technical procedure for detection of the sentinel lymph node using fluorescence imaging as showcased in gynecologic oncologicy. A multispectral fluorescence camera system, together with the fluorescent agent indocyanine green, is...

Collecting Saliva and Measuring Salivary Cortisol and Alpha-amylase in Frail Community Residing Older Adults via Family Caregivers

12.0K
We demonstrate: (1) procedures for collection of salivary samples in cognitive impaired older adults by family caregivers in the home setting, (2) procedures for measuring stress activity via salivary cortisol and alpha amylase, and (3) representative profiles. Protocols that allow researchers to study stress-linked processes advance our understanding of biological sensitivity and...

Protein Families02:47

Protein Families

16.7K
Protein families are groups of homologous proteins; that is, they have similarities in amino acid sequences and three-dimensional structures. Protein families usually occur because of gene duplication, where an additional copy of a gene is inserted into the genome of an organism.   Mutations that change the amino acids but still allow the protein to be properly synthesized, will lead to new protein family members.   If these new proteins contain similar amino acids in key...

Summary

Identifying and assessing family caregivers (CGs) in gynecologic oncology improved significantly, though unmet needs persist. This quality improvement project highlights the need for integrated CG support in cancer care.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Quality Improvement
  • Caregiver Support

Background:

  • 50% of family caregivers (CGs) in gynecologic oncology report significant unmet needs.
  • Only 19% of patients had a documented CG, hindering targeted support.
  • A needs assessment revealed a critical gap in identifying and addressing CG needs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To increase the identification and documentation of primary CGs for 85% of patients within two visits.
  • To assess the needs and implement interventions for 75% of identified family CGs.
  • To improve the integration of caregiver support within gynecologic oncology care.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) methodology and ASCO Quality Training Program tools.
  • An interprofessional team reviewed baseline data and identified root causes for poor CG identification.
  • Implemented eight successive PDSA cycles to address identified issues from October 2018 to March 2019.

Main Results:

  • CG identification increased from 19% to 57% post-implementation.
  • CG needs assessment improved from 28% to 60% post-implementation.
  • While goals were not fully met, significant initial improvements in care were achieved.

Conclusions:

  • A caregiver assessment protocol can be successfully implemented in a large academic gynecologic oncology clinic.
  • Ongoing efforts are underway to further integrate CG identification, assessment, and intervention.
  • This project underscores the feasibility and importance of systematic caregiver support in cancer care settings.
