Behavioral Assessment of the Aging Mouse Vestibular System

17.6K
Motor control and balance performance are known to deteriorate with age. This paper presents a number of standard noninvasive behavioral tests with the addition of a simple rotary stimulus to challenge the vestibular system and show changes in balance performance in a murine model of...

Assessment of Age-related Changes in Cognitive Functions Using EmoCogMeter, a Novel Tablet-computer Based Approach

14.1K
We tested the usability of a tablet-computer-based application (EmoCogMeter) in investigating the effects of age on cognition. Results show an age-related cognitive decline, thereby proving the usability of our application. Findings underline the great clinical and practical potential of a tablet-based application for detection and monitoring of cognitive...

Quantifying the Relative Thickness of Conductive Ferromagnetic Materials Using Detector Coil-Based Pulsed Eddy Current Sensors

6.1K
Here, we present a protocol to quantify the relative thickness (i.e., thickness as a percentage with respect to a reference) of conductive ferromagnetic materials using detector coil-based pulsed eddy current sensors, while overcoming the calibration...

Obtaining Specimens with Slowed, Accelerated and Reversed Aging in the Honey Bee Model

11.6K
In honey bee workers, aging depends on social behaviors rather than on chronological age. Here we show how worker-types with very different aging patterns can be obtained and analyzed for cellular...

Frailty Assessment in an Aging Mouse Model

438
The goal of the present protocol is to provide instructions and guidelines for assessing physical frailty in C57Bl/6x129J laboratory mice. Specific details regarding each measure used in the physical frailty index are explained. Several methods for reporting frailty results are also...

Fiber Optic Distributed Sensors for High-resolution Temperature Field Mapping

12.4K
We demonstrate use of a fiber optic distributed sensor for mapping the temperature field of mixing air jets. The Rayleigh scattering-based sensor generates thousands of data points along a single fiber to provide exceptional spatial resolution that is unattainable with traditional sensors such as...

    • To establish failure criteria and predict the long-term reliability of OCS.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of OCS failure modes and mechanisms.
    • Introduction of OCS insertion loss variation as a failure criterion.
    • Accelerated thermal aging tests at high temperatures.
    • Calculation of activation energy for OCS insertion loss failure.

    Main Results:

    • An allowable range for insertion loss variation was determined based on measurement error.
    • Activation energy for OCS insertion loss failure was calculated.
    • Median time to failure and instantaneous failure rate at normal temperature were derived.

    Conclusions:

    • The OCS exhibits an expected service life of 50 years under normal operating conditions.
    • The OCS demonstrates a low instantaneous failure rate, ensuring high reliability.
    • This research provides essential reliability data for OCT system assessments.
