Summary

Single-session hyperbaric oxygen therapy significantly increased peripheral oxygen saturation and decreased pulse rate in adult patients. Cardiorespiratory function remained stable, indicating a safe and effective intervention.

Background:

  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) involves breathing pure oxygen at elevated atmospheric pressure.
  • Understanding HBOT's acute effects on cardiorespiratory parameters is crucial for clinical application.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate cardiorespiratory alterations following a single session of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled study involving 14 adult patients.
  • Measurements included systemic blood pressure, peripheral oxygen saturation, pulse rate, lung volumes, lung capacity, and respiratory pressures.
  • Evaluations were conducted before, during, and after a 2-hour HBOT session.

Main Results:

  • HBOT group (n=7) showed a significant decrease in pulse rate (16 bpm) after 35 minutes.
