Experimental Column Setup for Studying Anaerobic Biogeochemical Interactions Between Iron (Oxy)Hydroxides, Trace Elements, and Bacteria06:52

Experimental Column Setup for Studying Anaerobic Biogeochemical Interactions Between Iron (Oxy)Hydroxides, Trace Elements, and Bacteria

8.2K
Fate and speciation of arsenic and mercury in aquifers are closely related to physio-chemical conditions and microbial activity. Here, we present an original experimental column setup that mimics an aquifer and enables a better understanding of trace element biogeochemistry in anoxic conditions. Two examples are presented, combining geochemical and microbiological...

Laser-guided Neuronal Tracing In Brain Explants

9.3K
We describe a technique to label neurons and their processes via anterograde or retrograde tracer injections into brain nuclei using an in vitro preparation. We modified an existing method of in vitro tracer electroporation by taking advantage of fluorescently labeled mouse mutants and basic optical equipment in order to increase labeling...

Fabrication of High Contrast Gratings for the Spectrum Splitting Dispersive Element in a Concentrated Photovoltaic System

11.1K
The fabrication of high contrast gratings as the parallel spectrum splitting dispersive element in a concentrated photovoltaic system is demonstrated. Fabrication processes including nanoimprint lithography, TiO2 sputtering and reactive ion etching are described. Reflectance measurement results are used to characterize the optical performance.

Elements and Compounds

103.1K
Pure substances consist of only one type of matter. A pure substance can be an element or a compound. An element consists of only one type of atom, while a compound consists of two or more types of atoms held together by a chemical bond.
Elements
Elements are classified as atomic or molecular based on the nature of their basic units. They are unique forms of matter with specific chemical and physical properties that cannot break down into smaller substances by ordinary chemical reactions. There...

Area of Science:

  • Neuro-oncology
  • Environmental Health
  • Biochemistry

Background:

  • Trace element levels are altered in various cancers, but brain tumor research is limited.
  • Understanding these alterations is crucial for potential diagnostic and therapeutic applications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review existing literature on trace element concentrations in brain tumors.
  • To identify gaps and inconsistencies in current research.

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive literature search was conducted on Google Scholar and PubMed up to January 2018.
  • Included all brain tumor types and publication years, analyzing 11 relevant articles.

Main Results:

  • Brain tumors showed higher concentrations of arsenic, thorium, lanthanum, lutetium, cerium, and gadolinium compared to controls.
  • Tumor tissue exhibited increased magnesium, decreased copper, and variable zinc levels compared to adjacent tissue.
  • Higher malignancy grades correlated with lower calcium, cadmium, iron, phosphorus, sulfur and higher mercury, manganese, lead, zinc.

Conclusions:

  • Trace element profiles in brain tumors are heterogeneous across tumor types and malignancy grades.
  • Existing data is insufficient for direct comparison due to methodological variations.
  • Future research requires standardized methods, larger sample sizes, and comparisons across tumor types and control groups.
