Mitral Valve Prolapse I: Introduction01:27

Mitral Valve Prolapse I: Introduction

395
IntroductionThe mitral valve, one of the heart's four valves, regulates blood flow. These valves have flaps that open and close to direct blood properly through the heart and body. During each heartbeat, the flaps open for blood to pass through and seal shut to prevent backflow. Specifically, the mitral valve opens to allow blood flow from the heart's upper left chamber to the lower left chamber. It then closes securely as the lower left chamber contracts to pump blood to the body, preventing...

Mitral Valve Prolapse II: Assessment and Management

449
IntroductionA range of clinical features characterizes Mitral Valve Prolapse (MVP), but it is important to note that many individuals with MVP are asymptomatic and may remain so throughout their lives. For those who do exhibit symptoms, the following are the key clinical features:Palpitations: This is a common symptom where individuals feel an irregular or rapid heartbeat. Palpitations in MVP are often due to arrhythmias such as premature ventricular contractions or supraventricular...

Mitral Valve Prolapse III: Nursing Management

298
The nursing management of Mitral Valve Prolapse, or MVP, centers around patient education, symptom monitoring, and lifestyle modifications.Patient Education on MVP Diagnosis and Heredity: Nurses should provide comprehensive education about MVP, a condition where the mitral valve does not close appropriately during heartbeats. This education often includes the condition's pathophysiology, symptoms, and potential complications, like arrhythmias or mitral regurgitation. Though not fully...

Fully Endoscopic Mitral Valve Repair with Percutaneous Cannulation of Groin Vessels

2.2K
This protocol demonstrates in detail how to perform fully endoscopic mitral valve surgery (EMS) with percutaneous cannulation of the groin vessels, using a percutaneous plug-based vascular closure device. Fundamental steps and useful instructions are described in detail for each step.

An Image Guided Transapical Mitral Valve Leaflet Puncture Model of Controlled Volume Overload from Mitral Regurgitation in the Rat

7.5K
A rodent model of left heart volume overload from mitral regurgitation is reported. Mitral regurgitation of controlled severity is induced by advancing a needle of defined dimensions into the anterior leaflet of the mitral valve, in a beating heart, with ultrasound...

Optimized Protocol for the Extraction of Proteins from the Human Mitral Valve

13.3K
The protein composition of the human mitral valve is still partially unknown, because its analysis is complicated by low cellularity and therefore by low protein biosynthesis. This work provides a protocol to efficiently extract protein for the analysis of the mitral valve...

Summary

Erectile dysfunction (ED) patients show a significantly higher prevalence of mitral valve prolapse (MVP). This study found ED patients had 1.63 times higher odds of prior MVP, regardless of age.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Urology
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Cardiovascular diseases and erectile dysfunction (ED) share known associations.
  • Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is a cardiovascular condition whose relationship with ED requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the association between prior mitral valve prolapse (MVP) and erectile dysfunction (ED).

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study utilizing the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Dataset.
  • Identified 48,755 patients with ED (cases) and 195,020 propensity score-matched controls without ED.
  • Conditional logistic regression analysis was performed to determine odds ratios (ORs) for prior MVP.

Main Results:

  • A total of 4,565 patients (1.87%) had MVP.
  • MVP prevalence was higher in ED cases (2.67%) compared to controls (1.67%).
  • Patients with ED had significantly higher odds of prior MVP (OR = 1.63, 95% CI 1.52–1.74).
  • This association persisted across age groups (≤65 years: OR = 1.68; >65 years: OR = 1.49).

Conclusions:

  • Erectile dysfunction is significantly associated with a higher likelihood of prior mitral valve prolapse.
  • The findings suggest a potential link between MVP and ED, irrespective of patient age.
