Virtual Reality Tools for Assessing Unilateral Spatial Neglect: A Novel Opportunity for Data Collection

4.5K
The goal was to design, build, and pilot a novel virtual reality task to detect and characterize unilateral spatial neglect, a syndrome affecting 23-46% of acute stroke survivors, expanding the role of virtual reality in the study and management of neurologic...

A Common Marmoset Model of Mother-Infant Intervention for Breastfeeding Disorders in the Presence of Paternal Inhibition and Maternal Neglect

867
Here, we present a nonhuman primate model of mother-infant intervention for breastfeeding disorders in the presence of paternal inhibition and maternal neglect. The mate model video complements education to support primate and human caregivers with respect to infants with breastfeeding problems such as pain.

The Bronchial Tree01:23

The Bronchial Tree

6.3K
The human bronchi and bronchial tree play a crucial role in the respiratory system, facilitating the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Let's delve into the intricate structure and functions of these respiratory components.
The trachea, commonly known as the windpipe, is a tube that connects the larynx (voice box) to the bronchi. At a point called the carina, it bifurcates into two primary bronchi. The right primary bronchus is wider, shorter, and more vertical than the left primary...

Bronchial Thermoplasty: A Novel Therapeutic Approach to Severe Asthma

32.4K
Bronchial thermoplasty is a non-drug procedure for severe persistent asthma that delivers thermal energy to the airway wall in a precisely controlled manner to reduce excessive airway smooth muscle. Reducing airway smooth muscle decreases the ability of the airways to constrict, thereby reducing the frequency of asthma...

Primary Human Bronchial Epithelial Cells Grown from Explants

24.7K
Here we describe a detailed method for growing primary human bronchial epithelial cells from explants of human bronchial airway tissue including differentiated growth on an air-liquid interface. This method provides an abundant source of primary cells for investigating the role of the airway epithelium in human lung health and...

Summary

A neglected foreign body in the bronchus, mimicking asthma for 23 years, was diagnosed after severe sepsis. Prompt removal via bronchoscopy and physiotherapy led to recovery, highlighting the need for early diagnosis of endobronchial foreign bodies.

Area of Science:

  • Pulmonology
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Medical Case Reports

Background:

  • Foreign body inhalation is a critical medical emergency, particularly in children, necessitating swift intervention to prevent complications.
  • Chronic respiratory symptoms can sometimes mask underlying endobronchial foreign bodies, leading to delayed diagnosis and treatment.

Observation:

  • A rare case of a foreign body remaining in an adult's bronchus for 23 years, initially misdiagnosed as intermittent asthma.
  • The patient developed severe sepsis of pulmonary origin, which ultimately led to the correct diagnosis.

Findings:

  • Rigid bronchoscopy successfully removed the long-standing foreign body.
  • Post-removal treatment included antibiotic therapy and respiratory physiotherapy, resulting in the resolution of pulmonary suppuration.
  • A small, asymptomatic bronchial dilatation was the only residual finding.

Implications:

  • Chronic, unexplained respiratory issues warrant investigation with imaging and endoscopy to rule out endobronchial causes, including overlooked foreign bodies.
  • Early detection and removal of bronchial foreign bodies are crucial to avert severe complications like sepsis and long-term lung damage.
