  • Investigate fronto-cingulate gray matter abnormalities in problematic smartphone users.
  • Focus on individuals with excessive social networking platform use via smartphone.

  • Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analysis.
  • Diffeomorphic anatomical registration using an exponentiated Lie algebra algorithm.
  • Region of interest analysis on the fronto-cingulate region.

Main Results:

  • Problematic smartphone users showed significantly smaller gray matter volume (GMV) in the right lateral orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) compared to controls.
  • Negative correlations found between right lateral OFC GMV and Smartphone Addiction Proneness Scale (SAPS) scores, including the tolerance subscale.

Conclusions:

  • Lateral orbitofrontal gray matter abnormalities are implicated in problematic smartphone use, particularly social networking overuse.
  • Reduced GMV in the lateral OFC correlates with increased immersion in smartphone use.
  • Orbitofrontal abnormalities may impair regulatory control over reinforced behaviors, underlying problematic smartphone use.
