Summary
This study reports the first case of Zoonotic Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ZCL) co-infection in a Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) patient. The patient experienced lesion recurrence after treatment cessation, highlighting challenges in managing co-infections.
Area of Science:
- Infectious Diseases
- Immunology
- Dermatology
Background:
- Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (CL) is a parasitic disease endemic in various regions, often co-occurring with immune disorders.
- Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease requiring immunosuppressive therapy, potentially increasing susceptibility to infections.
- Leishmania species cause CL, presenting as skin lesions, and its co-infection with SLE is rarely documented.
