Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the long-term outcomes of subacute thyroiditis (SAT) over a 30-year period.
  • To identify predictors for the development of permanent hypothyroidism after SAT.
  • To analyze the impact of treatment protocols on SAT outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of outcome data from 127 patients diagnosed with SAT.
  • Exclusion of patients with pre-existing hypothyroidism or other known causes.
  • Evaluation of pre-treatment TSH, gender, age, ultrasound findings, anti-thyroid antibodies, and inflammation markers as predictors.

Main Results:

  • Over 26.8% of SAT patients developed permanent hypothyroidism within three years.
  • High cumulative prednisolone doses were significantly associated with increased hypothyroidism prevalence.
