    Summary

    Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) reduced allostatic load (AL) biomarkers and self-perceived stress in graduate students. This pilot study suggests OMT may be a beneficial intervention for managing student stress and improving overall health.

    Background:

    • Limited research exists on osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) effects on allostatic load (AL) biomarkers.
    • AL measures the body's multisystem response to chronic stress and homeostatic deviation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the efficacy of OMT in modulating AL biomarkers in graduate students.
    • To assess the impact of OMT on overall health indicators in a graduate student population.

    Main Methods:

    • A within-subject, pre- and postintervention study design was employed.
    • Participants received OMT from an osteopathic physician.
    • Evaluated biomarkers included cortisol, catecholamines, glycated hemoglobin, dehydroepiandrosterone, HDL, hs-CRP, blood pressure, BMI, and waist-to-hip ratio, alongside the Trier Inventory for the Assessment of Chronic Stress.

    Main Results:

    • Both participants showed a decrease in overall AL scores post-OMT.
    • Self-perceived stress, measured by the Trier Inventory, significantly decreased after OMT.
    • Participant 1's AL score decreased from 7 to 4, and Participant 2's from 9 to 7.
    • Participant 1's stress score decreased from 18 to 15, and Participant 2's from 40 to 13.

    Conclusions:

    • The OMT protocol effectively reduced allostatic load and self-perceived stress in the studied graduate students.
    • OMT shows potential as a therapeutic modality for stress reduction in academic populations.
    • Further research with larger sample sizes is needed to confirm these findings.
