The Vestibular System01:29

The Vestibular System

43.5K
The vestibular system is a set of inner ear structures that provide a sense of balance and spatial orientation. This system is comprised of structures within the labyrinth of the inner ear, including the cochlea and two otolith organs—the utricle and saccule. The labyrinth also contains three semicircular canals—superior, posterior, and horizontal—that are oriented on different planes.

Equilibrium and Balance01:15

Equilibrium and Balance

6.3K
The inner ear assumes dual functionalities of auditory perception and equilibrium maintenance. The vestibule is the organ responsible for balance. This organ contains mechanoreceptors, specifically hair cells, endowed with stereocilia, which aid in deciphering information regarding the position and motion of our heads. Two intrinsic components, the utricle and saccule, help perceive head position, while the semicircular canals track head movement. Neurological messages initiated in the...

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Vestibular Rehabilitation
  • Vestibular System Disorders
  • Pediatric Physical Therapy

Background:

  • A 9-year-old child presented with a 9-month history of dizziness, headache, and motion sensitivity.
  • Symptoms impacted daily activities including playground play, car rides, and visual stimuli.
  • The child experienced difficulties with rapid head movements and visual tasks.

Observation:

  • Comprehensive evaluation included oculomotor, vestibular, and balance assessments.
  • Utilized Pediatric Vestibular Symptom Questionnaire and Dizziness Handicap Inventory-child caregivers version (DHI-PC).
  • Treatment involved virtual reality, adaptation, habituation, and balance exercises, with weekly sessions and daily home programs.

Findings:

  • Significant improvement in symptoms after 10 treatment sessions.
  • Reduced dizziness, headaches, and motion sensitivity.
  • Improved ability to engage in daily activities and tolerate visual stimuli, with notable reductions in DHI-PC scores.

Implications:

  • Vestibular rehabilitation is effective in managing pediatric vestibular dysfunction.
  • Improved quality of life and return to daily activities for affected children.
  • Highlights the importance of targeted physical therapy interventions for pediatric vestibular disorders.
