    Background:

    • Hypoxic changes in the myocardium are detectable via Lie's technique and fluorescence microscopy.
    • Ionic shifts, including sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), and calcium (Ca2+), are implicated in cardiac disease.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the parallelism between hypoxic myocardial changes and ionic alterations in autopsy cases.
    • To determine the relationship between these changes and cardiosclerosis, with or without myocardial infarction.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of 51 autopsy cases.
    • Application of Lie's technique and fluorescence microscopy to assess myocardial hypoxia.
    • Measurement of intracellular ionic concentrations (Na+, K+, Ca2+).

    Main Results:

    • Lie's technique detected hypoxic changes in 52.6% of cardiosclerosis with infarction and 15% without.
    • Fluorescence microscopy revealed hypoxic areas in all infarction cases and 35% of cardiosclerosis without infarction.
    • Decreased Na+ and K+, and increased Ca2+ were observed in both ventricles, irrespective of sex or infarction status.

    Conclusions:

    • Ionic changes (Na+, K+, Ca2+) in the myocardium are closely associated with cardiosclerosis.
    • The intensity of cardiosclerosis appears to be the primary driver of these ionic alterations, rather than patient age or sex.
