Sources of Self-Esteem II: Performance Feedback

168
Self-esteem is intricately tied to our perception of competence and our ability to exert control over our lives. One of the primary sources of this perception is performance feedback — the ongoing evaluation of our actions in terms of success and failure. According to Franks and Marolla (1976), people derive self-worth from experiencing themselves as causal agents, capable of achieving goals and overcoming obstacles. This process nurtures a critical component of self-esteem:...

The Sense of Self: Reflected Self-Appraisal and Social Comparison

55.3K
According to Charles Cooley, we base our image on what we think other people see (Cooley 1902). We imagine how we must appear to others, then react to this speculation. We don certain clothes, prepare our hair in a particular manner, wear makeup, use cologne, and the like—all with the notion that our presentation of ourselves is going to affect how others perceive us. We expect a certain reaction, and, if lucky, we get the one we desire and feel good about it. But more than that, Cooley...

Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model01:29

Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model

248
The Self-Evaluation Maintenance (SEM) model offers a psychological framework to understand how individuals’ self-esteem is influenced by the achievements of others, particularly those with whom they share close personal bonds. The SEM model operates when personal rather than social identity guides individuals. Central to this model is the notion that individuals have an inherent desire to preserve a favorable self-image, which is continuously shaped by interpersonal comparisons and...

Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification

5.7K
Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Self-Discrepancy Theory02:45

Self-Discrepancy Theory

18.8K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Area of Science:

  • Organizational Psychology
  • Human Resource Management

Background:

  • Employee creativity is crucial for business competitive advantage.
  • Existing research on feedback and creativity yields inconsistent results.
  • Limited studies explore the coworker perspective on feedback and creativity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the association between the coworker feedback environment and employee creativity.
  • To investigate the mediating role of feedback monitoring in this relationship.
  • To examine the moderating effect of self-motivation on the coworker feedback environment-creativity link.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized surveys for coworker feedback environment, feedback monitoring, self-motivation, and creativity.
  • Collected 235 valid questionnaires from employees in China (132 male, 103 female; mean age 30).
  • Employed Mplus 7.11 for descriptive, correlation, mediation, and moderation analyses.

Main Results:

  • A positive association was found between coworker feedback environment and creativity (β=0.60, p<0.01).
  • Coworker feedback monitoring partially mediated the relationship between feedback environment and creativity.
  • The positive impact of feedback monitoring on creativity was stronger with lower self-assessment motivation (β=0.19) and weaker with higher motivation (β=0.01).

Conclusions:

  • A supportive coworker feedback environment can enhance employee creativity through improved feedback monitoring.
  • The positive influence of feedback monitoring on creativity is more pronounced in individuals with lower self-assessment motivation.
  • Organizations can leverage coworker feedback mechanisms to foster innovation, particularly among less self-motivated employees.
