    Summary

Immunological examination of lateral amyotrophic sclerosis (LAS) patients revealed decreased lymphocytes and increased B-cells and IgM. Changes in T-suppressor cells suggest immune system involvement in LAS pathogenesis.

    Area of Science:

    • Neuroimmunology
    • Immunology

    Context:

    • Lateral amyotrophic sclerosis (LAS) is a neurodegenerative disease with complex pathogenesis.
    • Understanding the immunological underpinnings of LAS is crucial for developing targeted therapies.

    Purpose:

    • To conduct a comprehensive immunological assessment in patients with lateral amyotrophic sclerosis (LAS).
    • To investigate alterations in lymphocyte counts, T- and B-cell ratios, lymphocyte subpopulations, serum immunoglobulins, and circulating immune complexes in LAS patients.

    Summary:

    • Patients with LAS showed a reduced total lymphocyte count and an elevated percentage of B-cells and immunoglobulin M (IgM).
    • A significant shift was observed in the ratio of theophylline-resistant to theophylline-sensitive lymphocytes, indicating a decrease in T-suppressor cells.
    • Immunological profiles varied based on disease duration and severity, highlighting dynamic changes in the immune system during LAS progression.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Impact:

    • This study provides critical insights into the immunopathological mechanisms potentially contributing to LAS.
    • Findings suggest that immune dysregulation plays a role in LAS pathogenesis, opening avenues for immunomodulatory treatment strategies.
